Opening Night World Premier – A live concert featuring 14 groups each performing one song in the original order of classic motion picture soundtrack of Sholem Aleichem’s great tale.
From theatrical legends who have performed the role of Tevye on the stage such as Mike Burstyn or Bruce Adler to the recent Grammy nominated Klezmatics or popular Blue Fringe taking on the material. Imagine the classic song “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” sung by three of the most popular young female Jewish artists on the NY scene for the first time: Basya Schecter of Pharoah’s Daughter, Chana Rothman, and Shira Kline. The Sephardic sounds of Sarah Aroeste to the soulful voice of Neshama Carlebach or Debbie Friedman, the richness of the Jewish music scene is really represented. Even the most popular secular radio friendly pop rock is represented by Jill Sobule. New music from Heedoosh and Good for the Jews is rounded out by the new Klezmer from Greg Wall’s Later Prophets, Paul Shapiro’s Rib’s & Brisket Band, and Frank London’s Inebriated Orchestra. If there was a “hit single” from the soundtrack, it would have been “If I Were a Rich Man” which will be very unique collaboration between classic version sung by Mike Burstyn mixed and backed up by the Hip Hop of Y-Love and DJ Handler. The show is a production by Michael Dorf.
This is not just a world premier, but an impossible array of talent which can only come together in New York City. We are very privileged to live in the most prolific cultural capital in the world where creative talent assembled above can come on to one stage for 90 minutes of exhilarating entertainment. We hope you can make it.
The all-star line-up: “Tradition” – Klezmatics, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” – Basya Schechter, Chana Rothman, and Shira Kline, “If I Were a Rich Man” – Mike Burstyn with Y-Love & dj handler, “Sabbath Prayer” – Debbie Friedman, “To Life” – Blue Fringe, “Miracle of Miracles” – Bruce Adler, “The Dream” – Heedoosh, “Sunrise-Sunset” – Jill Sobule, “Wedding Dance” – Greg Wall & Later Prophets, “Now I Have Everything” – Sarah Aroeste, “Do you Love Me” – Good for the Jews w/ Jackie Hoffman, “The Rumor” – Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket Band, “Far from The Home I Love” – Neshama Carlebach, “Anatevka” – Di Shikere Kapelye (Frank London’s Inebriated Orchestra).

I was so looking forward to performing with my colleagues in the Jewish world and with you, the audience, at the Fiddling on the Roof event on October 20th. After all, I have fiddled on the roof more than any actor in the world, 2094 times at last count. But a previous contractual commitment prevents me from attending what I know will be a splendid experience for all, performers and audience alike. (I have yet to discover the trick of being in two places at the same time. For whatever it’s worth this has happened only twice in my long career. The late Luciano Pavarotti in contrast cancelled 211 appearances!)
I will be at the Schmooze ‘07 conference on Monday October 22, as planned and hope to see you there.
