Four Days in Ethiopia

Prints by Jonathan Levine

In September 2005, photographer Jonathan Levine accompanied a United Jewish Communities fact-finding mission to Ethiopia. His powerful images of Ethiopians awaiting approval to emigrate, photographed in their villages and in transit camps in Gondar and Addis Ababa, capture his subjects on the cusp of a new life in Israel.

The photos are available for sale with the proceeds benefiting Operation Promise, a partnership project of the Jewish federations of North America. Operation Promise funds will improve the quality of life of the Falas Mura by maintaining the Gondar and Addis compounds; helping with food, housing and healthcare; teaching Hebrew and other skills to ensure a smoother absorption; funding their airfare to Israel; and helping them become fully integrated into Israeli society. Operation Promise will also provide increased aid, comfort and education to as many as one million Jews remaining in the FSU. If we don’t help these communities today, we may not have an opportunity to help them tomorrow. For info, go to: www.ujc.org
